-
Grieg: Piano Concerto in A minor; Katya Grineva - Piano
-
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4

The season begins with two 19th century masterworks, Edvard Greig's only completed piano concerto, featuring soloist Katya Grineva, and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.4.
The piano concerto in A minor, composed in 1868, is one of Grieg's most popular works. He was only 24 when he wrote it and as was an excellent pianist himself, it is not surprising a piano concerto was among his earliest published works.
Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 was completed in 1878. The composer himself described it in a letter as reflecting the struggles of human life and the obstacles to lasting happiness. The passionate expression of such ideas is a feature of the romantic movement in musical composition.
